Experiment with new features
It’s likely that you haven’t played The Sims 4 before, so you may feel daunted by the wealth of new features presented to you. Build Mode now has a new, slightly confusing layout, and includes architectural stuff you might have never heard of before, like spandrels (we’re still not sure what they are). But you don’t need to be an architectural genius right away – don’t bother with foundations, half-walls, columns and double-height front doors until you really know what you’re doing. In the meantime, you can even use some of The Sims 4’s pre-built, pre-furnished rooms to create yourself a liveable house and figure out the rest as you go!

If you really want to be the kind of person who builds masterpiece houses that you wish you could live in yourself, there are two main things you should be doing. The first is checking out The Sims website, where people upload their builds and are rated on how good they are.

One of the biggest additions to The Sims 4 is Moods – based on their personality, their actions, and their surroundings, Sims will often be feeling some kind of Mood. This ranges from Flirty to Angry to Inspired and a whole bunch in between, and each Mood brings its own benefits or disadvantages that are worth paying attention to. When a Sim is Flirty, for example, flirt-related actions become available; when a Sim is Focused or Inspired, they can do better or faster work. Certain furniture and art can raise a certain Mood, so be sure to pay attention to your decor!

- resetsim [Sim name]: Resets your Sim, with full needs, removing all the bad Moodlets and whatever else is wrong with your Sim.
- FreeRealEstate on: Do this one on the Neighbourhood screen before you buy a house and ALL HOUSES WILL BE FREE. Of course, once you’re moved in, things cost money again.
- objects.consumables_infinite_toggle true: It’s a long one, but this one makes all consumable items in the household (food, potions, etc.) unlimited. Saves a lot of money and time!
- sims.modify_in_cas: If you’re dissatisfied with your Sims’ looks but you can’t do anything about it, this cheat will let you go back to the beginning and tweak their face as much as you like.
- stats.set_skill_level [1-10]: Learning skills the old-fashioned way is boring and time-consuming. Just set everything to 10! Life’s too short!
